j referred to my parents as his in-laws earlier tonight, and even though he said it very much in jest, even though the words were hastily and casually delivered, the sheer implication made me swoony.

neither, necessarily. it’s not sad, because seeing a movie is recreational as opposed to compulsory, so if one sees a movie alone, it’s the result of a conscious decision to do so. it is, additionally, quite efficient to see a movie alone, as the act of watching a movie requires no conversation (unless, of course, you are an elderly lady or gent). seeing movies in pairs or groups is somewhat like females heading to the restroom en masse: group security before and after what is, ultimately, a singular pursuit.

on the other hand, i wouldn’t call it awesome either. i certainly don’t feel awesome or confident when i see a movie by myself, especially if the theatre is populated by numerous high schoolers in a pack … however, there are times when, if i want to see something, i know that unless i resort to bribery, i’m going to be flying solo (i am reminded of 2001, when i had to see harry potter and the sorcerer’s stone all by my lonesome, which isn’t all that surprising considering it was my 4th viewing).

in general, i avoid peak times when i know it’s going to be my, myself, and the movies … but it’s really not bad on weekday afternoons or during sunday matinees. :)

i sort of kind of cannot stop eating cheese

update: the brunet is gone. i like the alta langa la tur, also, but it’s quite smelly, and i can’t really deal with it. the brunet has just the right balance of tang/goatiness/saltiness and creamy, unctuous pungency without smelling of moldy wigwam socks. i understand that many excellent cheeses stink, and perhaps i am highlighting my fromageian novice-hood in saying this, but i don’t think i could ever overcome a really malodorous first impression enough to enjoy the taste of the cheese itself.

i haven’t cracked the faulkner yet, but of the 5 books i read during my trip, 4 of them were short stories and/or humorous, and those were the 4 i liked.

both the david sedaris and bill bryson made me audibly ~~snort~~ laugh…and considering i did the bulk of reading those books in public, i probably looked like a lunatic, but oh well. i knew i would like unexpected earth — i love short fiction, and i think jhumpa lahiri is especially clean and tight with her words. 84, charing cross road defies categorization, but its brevity and humor keeps it within the parameters. i wanted to like the history of love, especially since i shelled out $13.95 for it (stupid me), but, despite the loveable main character, i wasn’t moved at all. it’s not that it was bad; it’s just not what i like. i can’t remember the last time i enjoyed a modern novel … probably not since the secret life of bees, and even that was not something i can imagine rereading (and i reread everything i love).

funny, but come to think of it, there are few 20th or 21st century books that i really, really like that aren’t either short story collections or humorous travel novels. i guess i was born in the wrong century.
